LESSON 4.6

Crypto Risk and Long-Term Investing

Crypto adds technological, regulatory, custody and counterparty risk on top of extreme price volatility.

Learning objectives

  • List the layers of crypto risk beyond price swings
  • Explain how position size limits the damage
  • Recognize that a small position can still be lost entirely

Layered risks

Crypto carries every risk equities do, plus several of its own.

  • Extreme volatility, including declines of 70% or more
  • Regulatory change that can alter access overnight
  • Custody and platform failure
  • Protocol and smart-contract exploits
  • Concentrated ownership and thin liquidity in smaller tokens
  • Frequent fraud and impersonation schemes, which regulators warn about repeatedly

Position sizing limits the damage

Because the range of outcomes includes total loss, the size of a crypto position determines how much a mistake can cost. Any amount held should be an amount you could lose entirely without altering your life.

Sizing does not replace choosing carefully. What the asset is, who controls it, and how it is custodied still decide whether a loss happens at all.

Key concepts

Select a term to read its definition.

  • Volatility

How sharply a value moves over time. High volatility means a wider range of short-term outcomes.

  • Counterparty risk

The risk that the other party to an arrangement — an exchange, lender or issuer — fails to meet its obligations.

  • Position sizing

Deciding how much to hold in one investment. It limits how much a mistake can cost; it does not make the choice unimportant.

  • Liquidity

Why this matters

Size limits how much a crypto loss can hurt; asset and custody choices decide whether it happens.

Check your understanding

No score is recorded. This is only here to test whether the lesson landed.

1. What does this lesson identify as the primary practical control over how much crypto risk can hurt you?
2. True or false: buying an asset because its price is rising quickly, without understanding what it is, is the same thing as long-term investing.
3. An investor writes down, in advance and while calm, a target of 3% of their portfolio for a crypto asset they have researched, to be rebalanced back to 3% each quarter if it drifts outside 2–4%. What does this illustrate?

Key takeaways

  • Crypto adds technology, regulatory, custody and counterparty risk to price volatility.
  • Position size is the main control you have over how much a loss can hurt.
  • A small position can still go to zero.
