Crypto Volatility and Risk

Crypto adds technological, regulatory, custody and counterparty risk on top of extreme price volatility.

Layered risks

Crypto carries every risk equities do, plus several of its own.

  • Extreme volatility, including declines of 70% or more
  • Regulatory change that can alter access overnight
  • Custody and platform failure
  • Protocol and smart-contract exploits
  • Concentrated ownership and thin liquidity in smaller tokens
  • Fraud rates far higher than in regulated markets

Position sizing is the real control

Because the range of outcomes includes total loss, the size of a crypto position matters more than which token is chosen. Any amount held should be an amount you could lose entirely without altering your life.

Why this matters

Size, not selection, is what determines whether a crypto loss is survivable.

Terms used in this lesson

Volatility
How sharply a value moves over time. High volatility means a wider range of short-term outcomes.
