Fees: Small Percentages, Large Costs

Fees are charged on the entire balance every year, so they compound against you.

Where fees hide

Most investors never see a bill; the cost is deducted from assets.

  • Fund expense ratios
  • Advisory or platform fees charged on assets
  • Trading commissions and bid-ask spreads
  • Sales loads and account maintenance fees
  • Currency conversion charges

Why a percent matters

A 1% annual fee removes 1% of everything you own each year, including all accumulated growth. Over decades that repeated deduction compounds into a substantial share of what your balance could otherwise have been.

The Study fee calculator lets you compare two hypothetical fee levels on the same contributions to see the gap. Those figures are arithmetic illustrations, not forecasts.

Why this matters

Fees are subtracted with certainty, while returns are uncertain.

Terms used in this lesson
